ABOUT THE DESIGN:
Cathedrals were tattooed in Russian prison culture to specify the number of years one has spent in prison or the number of convictions he or she has. The domes or crosses can each stand for 1 year or 5 years or 1 conviction. Each time a man would get convicted or do time, he would tattoo another dome onto the cathedral. There is also another meaning for tattooing the cathedral. It means that your body and your soul is your church and you will never let anyone desecrate it in any way. Which is the meaning I had in mind when making this design.
There's also a Lenin tattoo on the front which was a popular anti-authority tattoo but it has double meaning as do many other tattoos from that era. The letters underneath Lenin spell VOR, the Russian word for thief (which Lenin definitely was). But the letters are also an acronym that stand for Leader of October Revolution. So if an inmate was hassled by administration, he could always state that he was just really patriotic.
On the shoulders are 2 fly tattoos. The fly is a nod to a Russian fairy tale character Muxa Tsikatuha. A fly tattoo usually represented a pickpocket but could also be for good luck, like the scarab or beetle tattoo. The spade suit is a trumps suit and is respected among the thieves.
